How to Pay for AI Subscriptions Using Virtual Cards: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Signing up to pay for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Gemini Advanced should be straightforward. That is what most people assume. After all, you just need to enter your card information, click submit, and you're set. But this is not the case. For millions outside the United States signing up to these AI platforms can be a very big challenge. They face declined payments, frustrating error messages, and literally no one to ask.
A virtual card can fix most of these problems. Here's how to use one.
Why Your Card Keeps Getting Declined
AI platforms from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google all charge in USD. And most run their payments through Stripe. That setup creates real problems for people in many other countries where Stripe or similar payment methods are not supported.
Also there could be some few common reasons why your card failed:
- Banks in most of those countries often block foreign auto-debits because of local payment rules
- Most AI platforms need a US billing address tied to your card
- Some banks quietly block charges from overseas tech companies without telling you why
Your perfectly valid card gets refused. And to top it off they will not give you any reason why the payments failed. Just that painful “payment failed” screen staring back at you.
What a Virtual Card Actually Is
A virtual card is a card number you created online. It's a functional card that works just like any normal bank card. The difference is that it's entirely digital. It lives inside of an app or browser dashboard. So basically, there is no plastic card and you don't even need to wait for delivery.
You can even put a spending limit on it if you want. You can also attach any valid billing address to it. And if you plug in a US address your payment is far more likely to be accepted. Once AI detection platforms see a valid card paired with a US address, the transaction will usually go through.
What Each Platform Actually Accepts
Not all AI platforms handle payments the same way though. Here's a quick breakdown.

Claude gives you the fewest payment options. ChatGPT sits in the middle. Gemini accepts several types but shuts the door on virtual cards completely.
Subscribing with a Virtual Card
- Sign up with a virtual card issuer. Both Wise and Halocard work great. Verify your identity (takes a few minutes). And you do not even need a US address or to live in the US to sign up.
- Deposit money into your card. Make sure you put enough money in your card to pay for the subscription. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20/month. To be on the safer side you can also add a few dollars extra on top.
- Create your virtual card. Write down the card number, CVV, expiration date, and billing address displayed on your dashboard. The billing address is more important than most realize.
- Open an incognito tab. Go to the AI website and locate the “Billing” or “Upgrade” section. Enter your virtual card info. When you get to the billing address input, type in the billing address from your virtual card dashboard. You should not enter your physical address — only use your virtual card's dashboard address.
- Enter your one-time code. You may also receive a one-time code on your virtual card app. Enter that when the website prompts you for it. That's just security they're asking you for. You're all subscribed after you pass that.
Tips for Smooth Monthly Renewals
Set your limit on the card to whatever your subscription cost is. This prevents surprise withdrawals should something go awry during renewal.
Also try to deposit money onto the card a few days early. Prepaid virtual cards don't notify you when they run out. You may return to find your access to AI services already suspended.
If you receive a declined error with a virtual card, try signing up with a provider that uses Visa credit cards instead of prepaid cards. Visa credit cards are accepted significantly more often at AI websites than prepaid cards.
Write down your virtual card information and store it somewhere accessible. Should you change cards or alter your plan in any way you will have to re-input the information onto every individual website.
